Tom Blomqvist embarks on a new journey in his career as the 24-year old prepares to make his debut in the ABB FIA Formula E championship as the series heads to Marrakesh for the third race of the 2017/18 season.
At the BMW Season Review event in December, it was announced that Tom would be leaving the DTM, after three successful seasons, to join MS&AD Andretti Formula E as of the third race of the season - this weekend in Marrakesh. The young Brit will join fellow BMW works driver, António Félix da Costa for the remainder of the Formula E season. With MS&AD Andretti solely responsible for the #27 car, Tom has been given the opportunity to prove his worth as he steps back into a single-seater for the first time since 2014.
The MS&AD Andretti Formula E team is in its fourth season of Formula E in 2017/18. So far, Michael Andretti’s (USA) team has contested 35 races, claimed three pole positions, five podiums and scored 210 points. This season got off to a solid start as António Félix da Costa took sixth place in the first race of the season to put the team in eighth place as the series heads to Morocco.
The race in Morocco is unique in Formula E, as the only event held on a semi-permanent racetrack. It is making its second appearance on the calendar, having also featured in Season 3. The layout was designed by Hermann Tilke and is the longest on the calendar at 2.97km. Three big straights and the long, fast second turn, combined with the North African climate, make the track a challenge for battery economy, but heavy braking zones provide plenty of overtaking opportunity.
Tom’s first taste of the MS&AD Andretti ATEC-03 came in October where the BMW driver got up to speed with energy saving and recovery, as well as the Michelin all-weather tyres. However, this weekend will mark Tom’s first competitive action behind the wheel of the all-electric Formula E car and he is proud to be given a chance in this exciting championship.
“I am super happy and excited to be making my debut for MS&AD Andretti Formula E in Marrakesh. I feel as prepared as I can be with the limited time I‘ve had in the car testing. It‘s going to be a massive challenge but I am up for it! I have to say thank you to MS&AD, MS Amlin, BMW and Andretti for giving me this huge opportunity. I believe the FIA Formula E Championship has a bright future and I‘m so proud to be a part of it.”
Team owner, Michael Andretti, is ‘very excited’ to see Tom make his debut in the championship.
“The MS&AD Andretti team had a strong start to the season in Hong Kong with António finishing sixth in Round 1. We have been working through the holidays to build on that momentum and get both cars in the points in Marrakesh. The team is very excited to see the debut of Tom Blomqvist, who I believe is one of the most exciting up-and-coming drivers in motorsport. He has shown that he has the ability to excel and I am looking forward to seeing him bring that success and work ethic to Formula E.”
The schedule this weekend all falls on a busy Saturday (13th January) with free practice starting proceedings at 08:00 (GMT).
