Blomqvist storms to the podium in Le Mans thriller

  • Tom raced at the 89th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with JOTA in the LMP2 class

  • The team qualified seventh on the grid for the start of the race and were looking forward to an action-packed race

  • Starting in wet conditions, the race was full of drama from the off - with Tom taking the lead of the race just after the four-hour mark, following a safety car period for a heavy crash

  • Running out in front, Tom built up and eight second gap at the head of the field before a stop-and-go penalty and a drive-through penalty sent the car into the pitlane and off the lead lap

  • Determined to fight back from a five-minute deficit, the team put on a valiant effort to storm back onto the lead lap and into third in class as the race entered its final stages

  • At the wheel for the grand finale, Tom was locked in a tight battle for second place with the #31 WRT

  • As the race entered its final minutes, the leading #41 WRT stopped on track - with Tom now battling for the win with the #31

  • A nail-biting final lap saw Tom cross the finish line just seven tenths away from the WRT car

  • The result marked Tom’s first podium finish at Le Mans in just his second appearance at the race and his third podium result of the season

  • Tom and his #28 team mates, Sean Gelael and Stoffel Vandoorne, now hold a one-point advantage to lead the LMP2 Drivers Championship with two rounds of the season to go

“What a week it’s been. To race at Le Mans is a real pinch yourself moment so to be in the fight for victory and to stand on the podium is just an amazing feeling. The race was a real rollercoaster of emotions. Starting in the wet added a whole different challenge to deal with but we had a really good rhythm going on our side of the garage. The penalties were unfortunate but I’m really proud of the way we fought back from there, especially to finish less than a second off the win. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the team for their hard work in giving us such a great car and to Sean and Stoffel for the brilliant job they did.”
