Tom Blomqvist to contest Nurburgring 24 Hours with Phoenix Racing

Tom Blomqvist will once again contest the Nurburgring 24 Hours (21st May - 24th May) as he joins forces with Phoenix Racing, driving the team’s #14 Audi R8 LMS GT3 SP9-class entry.

It will be Tom’s fifth visit to the historic race and his first time behind the wheel of an Audi, the marque his father, Stig Blomqvist, tasted huge success with in the 1980s when he won the 1984 World Rally Championship.

A hugely successful outfit, Phoenix Racing won the event in 2019, marking their fifth outright Nurburgring 24 Hours victory. They’ve also triumphed in DTM, winning the 2011 Drivers’ Championship and completing a clean sweep of both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships in 2013 with the Audi brand.

Tom yields a huge amount of GT experience with stints in the World Endurance Championship, Blancpain GT Series, Intercontinental GT Challenge, IMSA and VLN.

Enjoying several success trips to the Nurburgring, Tom has recorded four trips to the podiums and a fastest lap in his races in the VLN and N24h qualification races, with his best result in the main race coming in 2017 when he narrowly missed out on the podium - finishing in 4th placed.

Recent successes for Tom include a second place finish in his debut at the Bathurst 12 Hours, also in GT3 machinery, with his GT highlight coming in 2018 in the form of overall victory at the 24 Hours of Spa - the biggest race on the GT3 calendar.

Tom will race the Nurburgring 24 Hours alongside his full-time programme with R Motorsport to race in Europe’s premier GT3 championship - the 2020 GT World Challenge Europe Endurance and Sprint Cups.

Joining an illustrious driver line-up, Tom will share the car with 2017 ADAC GT Master champion Jules Gounon, 2016 Blancpain GT Sprint Cup Silver Cup winner Michele Beretta and 2018 Nurburgring 24 Hour SP10 class winner Kim Luis Schramm.

“I’m delighted to be joining Phoenix Racing for this year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours. It’ll be a new experience, driving the Audi R8 LMS GT3, but I can’t wait to get behind the wheel and get the work started with the team.

“Working with such a successful and experienced team, and with co-drivers like Jules, Michele, and Kim Luis, puts us in a strong position to get a good result from the race. Also a big thank you to R-Motorsport for letting me return to one of my favourite races in the world.”

The Nurburgring 24 Hours weekend takes place from May 21st to May 24th.
